Duties

Major Work Duties
  • Assist crime scene agents in processing crime scenes, collection and identification of evidence, log items into evidence vault, transport and submit evidence to the OSBI laboratory, return evidence to requestors.
  • Complete training in alignment with OSBI crime scene agent duties.
Typical Functions
  • Investigates pertinent criminal and/or regulatory violations, all defenses and/or the background of a client and relevant individuals as directed
  • Conducts interviews with and interrogates witnesses, suspects, family members, and other appropriate individuals to obtain facts and evidence from the scene
  • Collects and preserves evidence, maintains related records, and chain of custody
  • Analyzes and evaluates collected evidence and information and prepares a written report
  • Prepares investigative prosecutorial reports and drafts and executes legal documents as requested
  • Appears as a witness in court proceedings to testify to the findings of the investigation
  • Assists grand juries by serving subpoenas and assembling witnesses
  • Provides law enforcement assistance to other local, state, and federal agencies when requested
  • Maintains a working, professional relationship as best as possible with the client, potential witnesses, and the client's family
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative communication with internal staff, law enforcement personnel, witnesses, and others involved with the case
  • Supervise lower-level investigative staff
This is the basic level of the job family, where employees are primarily responsible for performing routine entry level work in a training status to build their job-related skills. Responsibilities include receiving calls from appropriate authorities to begin investigation, examining and diagramming the scene of the crime, including a decedent, collecting evidence, taking statements, and other investigative action. Assignments are well detailed and well prescribed by the supervisor.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of modern methods of investigation;
  • Fingerprinting; and human anatomy.
  • Abilities required at this level include ability to work in a variety of environments and weather conditions;
  • Write technical and routine business correspondence;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of:
  • an Associate degree -AND- three (3) years of experience
  • -OR- an equivalent combination of education and experience.
*Preference will be given to applicants who possess a Bachelor's degree.

Special Requirements
  • Positions at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will be provided with radio, camera, American Board Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) yearly membership fee, vehicle monthly lease and fuel, clothing, laptop, and cell phone contract. Must function in accordance with State Statue, agency policies, and ABMDI.
  • Some agencies may require a degree in a specific area of study, such as forensic, etc.
  • Some agencies may require experience in a specific field of work.
  • Successful applicants must be willing to submit to a drug screen, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation (commissioned positions only), and a thorough background investigation. Certain events automatically disqualify an applicant, such as, felony conviction; admission of an undetected crime that, if known, would have been a felony charge; failure to pay federal or state income tax; positive confirmed drug urine test; illegal use of a controlled substance within certain time frames.
