About the Opportunity The Research Scientist in biogeography, California change ecology, and community-collected data integration reports to the Director of the Center for Biodiversity and Community Science within the Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability (IBSS). The role involves establishing a research program leveraging biodiversity data to address ecological transitions across California, including wildfire resilience and urban biodiversity. A strong publication record, commitment to service, external funding pursuit, outreach engagement, and mentorship are expected. This is a full-time, temporary position. This position is based in San Francisco, with a requirement to work onsite 2-3 times weekly, subject to change based on needs. Do not apply if unable to work onsite. Key Responsibilities Conduct biodiversity research with Academy scientists and partners. Lead data collection, analysis, visualization, and communication. Mentor early-career scientists and students. Develop and teach workshops or courses as needed. Support training and participation of underrepresented groups in science. Engage in educational activities for staff and volunteers. Ensure scientific accuracy in messaging. Provide updates to funders and partners. Disseminate findings through reports, publications, and presentations. Build and maintain professional networks. Participate in scientific societies and advise institutions. Provide specimen identifications as appropriate. Review scientific manuscripts and proposals. Participate in fieldwork as needed. Follow safety regulations. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Ph.D. in evolutionary biology, ecology, bioinformatics, data science, or related fields. Postdoctoral research experience. At least 7 years of biodiversity research experience. Excellent communication skills in English. Passion for biodiversity and science communication. Expertise in data analysis and modeling. Experience with reproducible workflows and version control (Git, GitHub). Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and with diverse stakeholders. Commitment to anti-racist practices. Strong organizational and detail-oriented skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience securing and managing external funding. Ability to collaborate with non-scientists. Creative and flexible mindset. Expertise in R programming, statistical analysis, and geospatial analysis tools (QGIS, ArcGIS). Ability to interpret safety and operational documents.
