PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Category Manager, Large Animal, is a pivotal role responsible for the strategic development and execution of our product categories catering to large animals (e.g., livestock, equine). This individual will be accountable for driving sales, profitability, and market share growth within these specialized categories by deeply understanding the needs of farmers, ranchers, and equine professionals, identifying market opportunities, cultivating strong supplier partnerships, and implementing effective merchandising strategies. The Category Manager will be instrumental in shaping our product assortment and ensuring we offer a relevant, high-quality, and competitive selection for our large animal customer base. This individual will lend expertise to the Companion Animal team as needed.

LOCATION: Brentwood, TN (hybrid) - you MUST reside in a commutable area to Brentwood. We can not consider any candidate who must relocate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Category Strategy & Planning:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive category strategies aligned with overall business objectives and the specific needs of the large animal market.
  • Conduct thorough market analysis, including understanding agricultural trends, livestock and equine industries, competitive offerings, pricing dynamics, and emerging product innovations (e.g., animal health, feed supplements, equipment).
  • Identify and evaluate new product opportunities and potential category expansions within the large animal sector.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track category performance against targets (sales, margin, inventory turnover, etc.).
  • Develop and manage category budgets and forecasts.

Supplier Relationship Management:

  • Forge and maintain robust, collaborative relationships with key suppliers in the large animal industry (e.g., feed manufacturers, animal health companies, equipment providers).
  • Negotiate favorable terms, pricing, and promotional programs that meet the unique demands of this market and ensure product availability during critical agricultural seasons.
  • Evaluate supplier performance based on factors relevant to the large animal sector (e.g., product efficacy, reliability, delivery timelines).
  • Stay informed about supplier advancements, new product introductions tailored for large animals, and relevant industry regulations.

Product Assortment & Merchandising:

  • Define and optimize the product assortment within assigned large animal categories to meet the specific needs of farmers, ranchers, and equine professionals, while achieving financial goals.
  • Collaborate with merchandising and marketing teams to develop effective strategies for reaching this specialized customer base, considering both in-store and potentially direct-to-farm/ranch channels, as well as online platforms.
  • Analyze sales data and customer feedback (from producers, veterinarians, etc.) to identify top-performing products, slow-moving inventory, and assortment gaps specific to large animal needs.
  • Make informed decisions regarding product selection, placement (considering bulk storage and handling), and targeted promotional activities relevant to agricultural and equine cycles.

Pricing & Promotion:

  • Develop and implement pricing strategies that are competitive within the agricultural and equine markets, considering factors like commodity prices and farm economics.
  • Plan and execute promotional campaigns and initiatives that resonate with large animal owners and professionals, potentially aligning with key agricultural seasons or equine events.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of pricing and promotional activities and make data-driven adjustments.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with marketing, e-commerce (if applicable for large animal supplies), supply chain (considering bulk and specialized delivery), and potentially agricultural sales teams to ensure seamless execution of category plans.
  • Provide category insights relevant to the large animal market to support targeted marketing efforts and online content.
  • Collaborate with supply chain to optimize inventory levels, considering the seasonality and storage requirements of large animal products.
  • Effectively communicate category performance and strategies to internal stakeholders, including those with agricultural expertise.

Market Knowledge & Trends:

  • Continuously monitor trends within the agricultural, livestock, and equine industries, including regulatory changes, technological advancements in animal husbandry, and evolving producer needs.
  • Attend relevant industry trade shows, agricultural fairs, and equine events to identify new products and build relationships within this specialized sector.
  • Leverage agricultural market research, veterinary insights, and producer feedback to inform category decisions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Merchandising, Agricultural or Animal Science, or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience in buying, category management, or a related role within the livestock or equine industry, agricultural supply, or Large Animal health sector; some level of experience in the Companion Animal sector is preferred.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful category strategies that drive sales and profitability.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, draw conclusions, and make data-driven decisions relevant to the large animal/agricultural market.
  • Excellent negotiation and supplier management skills, with an understanding of the unique dynamics of the agricultural supply chain.
  • Deep understanding of the large animal market, including product trends, key suppliers, animal health, nutrition, equipment, and the specific needs of farmers, ranchers, and equine professionals.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals with agricultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
